The Ombudsman asked the Attorney General of the Republic, Jean Alain Rodríguez, to resolve the overcrowded situation with the greatest urgency, in which dozens of people deprived of their liberty are on a bus located in the Palace of Justice on Charles de Gaulle Avenue , in Santo Domingo Este.
Zoila Martínez Guante indicated that these detainees are awaiting transfer to the penitentiary centers where they will comply with the coercion measure consisting of preventive detention.
Martínez Guante recommended that the Covid 19 tests be carried out on these people, in order to safeguard the right to health of both those deprived of liberty and administrative staff.
“The bus does not meet the structural conditions for the permanence of a human being, the prevailing situation constituting a violation of human dignity, the foundation of our social and democratic state of law,” said the defender of the people.
Martínez Guante deplored the conditions of these people in a letter that he sent to the Attorney, dated June 1.
This week a team of lawyers from the Ombudsman made the fourth visit to the minibus where the preventives are waiting for their transfer to the penitentiary centers, in order to verify the overcrowded conditions.
