SANTO DOMINGO.-The Ministry of Public Health intervened yesterday at the “San Francisco de Asís” Nursing Home for an outbreak of Covid-19, which led to its director and two other nuns being hospitalized by the virus.
Three inmates died, but the provisional report is that it was as a consequence of complications of their age.
“You’re negative, go easy on it!” One of the four doctors who applied the rapid tests of the Covid-19 in the asylum was heard to say.
Meanwhile, a grandfather of about 80 years, with a look of relief, walked towards the hall, thanking for the service.
Upon entering the home, one gets the impression that they are accessing a hospital, since dozens of collaborators with a gown, gloves and masks left and entered the place, which was also guarded by the Defense Ministry military.
And it is that around 40 servers, among them doctors and nurses, belonging to the three brigades of Public Health, Ministry of Defense and the National Council of the Aging Person (Conape), went to their aid to assess the health situation and give medical support for the 220 older adults hosted there.
They set up two tents at the entrance, one to disinfect the donations of food and supplies that arrive and the other to measure the temperature to which they could enter in a restricted way.
This emergency operation arises as a result of a complaint made by a center volunteer that eight inmates died from Covid-19,
However, the regional coordinator of nursing homes in Conape, José Estévez, informed EL DÍA that three inmates died on Sunday, but due to issues related to their advanced age. He assured that so far none of the inmates has required hospitalization.
He said that the number of infected people will be announced at the conclusion of the operation, but the mother Sor Juliana, director of the home and two other nuns, are admitted to the Marcelino Vélez Santana Hospital in a delicate state with suspicions of Covid-19.
The management of the center is calling the relatives of the inmates with availability to protect them in their homes until they clean up the asylum, because they are in a more vulnerable group. They were dispatching them as family members came.
