The detainee, identified as Yamil Abreu Navarro, is requested by the attorney general for the Eastern District of New York.
He is accused of being the contact in the country for the Sinaloa cartel to organize drug shipments from the southern region.
Abreu Navarro served as director of the Las Lagunas Municipal District until last April 24, after losing the elections of the current director Diómedes Suero.
The defendant won the mayoralty in 2016 for the Modern Revolutionary Party and sought reelection by that same party.
The DNCD reported that the North American authorities had requested judicial assistance against Abreu Navarro in 2018, but that it was in February of this year that an indictment was issued, which was the one that served for the Supreme Court of Justice to authorize extradition to States. United.
The North American authorities formalized the accusation against him last January 9, when he was still serving as Municipal Director.
